Introduction

In Melbourne we had an extended summer, with hot days and balmy nights for many of our big events such as the Grand Prix and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Economic change has been in the air and Australia is experiencing a significant down turn in our economy.  It is tempting to either ignore the economy and hope for the best or succumb to fear about the worst. When the best thing to do is: ask questions, listen to experts and take positive steps towards building a successful business.  It’s more important now that critical success factors are identified, processes are tightened to reduce waste, key performance indicators are monitored and debtors are managed.

In an article published on March 12, 2008 in The Age: http://smallbusiness.theage.com.au/starting/finance/worse-to-come:-business-survey-909502056.html  Tim Colebatch writes that both business conditions and business confidence continue to deteriorate.  One in four of the businesses surveyed said profitability was poor last month, while the average change in prices has slowed to 0.5% in the past quarter.

Good news for mortgage brokers though - they have something to smile about as the number of loans for both first time buyers and owner/occupiers rose, as did the number of mortgage holders re-financing.

Make sure you stay ahead of the game by keeping up to date with how the shifting economy affects your company…… will it make your customers more or less likely to spend, how will it change their spending priorities, and what can you offer that will assist them?  We would also love to hear from you if you are a business in Victoria and have a business turnover of over $500,000 with a very innovative product or service that will make Victoria more profitable.  Government grants may be available to the right applicants.

Grow your business

People who step out on their own and start up a business are generally passionate about what they do, are usually highly skilled in their field and have creative minds. Something that doesn’t always come naturally is the knowledge of how to plan and manage growth.

There are a number of key steps you can take to improve your skills in this area and make sure your business goes from strength to strength.

All businesses have to deal with cashflow issues.  These cashflow issues are magnified when sales increase and the finance process is not under control.   Many growing businesses end up bankrupt before they have really given themselves a chance.  Growing a business is the riskiest time of a business. and quite frequently I see cashflow issues, and business owners that don’t know what is owed to the business.   Michael Gerber calls it the adolescent stage.  It’s important to make sure systems are in place and the information is correct.
